Avi Kaye is a senior at Denver Jewish Day School and is excited to pursue his passions of nutrition, early childhood literacy, and family connection. In numerous low-income communities, many children do not have the means or education to practice reading or to eat healthy. Accordingly, for his project, Avi is focusing on promoting engaging nutrition instruction and literacy experiences. Next year, he will attend Stanford University as a freshman.
Venture: Cooking Up Literacy
Cooking Up Literacy is an education tool to promote healthy habits and literacy practice in low-income families. The first component is direct education, in which families cook nourishing food and read a nutrition-based book within a controlled environment. Afterwards, the participants are supplied the resources to reinforce what they learned, provided in the form of a package complete with a recipe and food to cook and a book to read at home.
